Uff-da. You know the saying, "Live and learn"? My version is "almost die and don't learn". Crickey. I'm currently at the tail end of a near-fatal hangover, but man was it worth it.
My brothers arrived Monday evening around 10pm, and we started drinkin'. I'd started when I got home at 4pm, and then continued at my drinking (err, "investing") club meeting, so at midnight I invoked my trusty "anytime you party longer than you normally work in a day, it's OK to stop" rule. About 1am we fell asleep in my brother's tipi. Stupidly, I failed to notice the two foam pads rolled up next to me, so I slept on the hard lump uncomfortable ground. Ugga. Tuesday morning, we had our typical brother-reunion breakfast of "Eggs a la Krom". This recipe is in units per brother: Six eggs, scrambled, half a head of cabbage, shredded, half an onion, carmelized, five cloves of garlic, and this time Dan threw in a bunch of refried beans. Cook it all up together and it makes for one motherfucking LARGE plate of food. A real gutbomb, perfect fuel for a 12 hour buttrock festival. After breakfast, we got ready and drove down to the Muckelshoot Indian reservation where their White River Amphitheater is. Hot 82F and sunny day, and little shade to be found. Aw, crickey, I have to go help my friend move a 1000 pound machine tool, I'll have to finish this tomorrow. Monday, July 26, 2004
The party on Saturday was awesome. Their house is small, but their yard is large. There were well over 50 people there, lots of kids, several kiddy pools and a slip-n-slide for the kids to play in. Our kids, like normal, took several hours to warm up to the party and be willing to be more than 1 foot from B, but they had a blast when they finally got over being shy. Lots of beer, lots of friends. Fun fun.
On Sunday I was supposed to get to sleep in, but B had another bad heartburn attack so I had to drive to Safeway at 6:30 in the morning, hardly able to see, and buy some maalox. We then watched Lance Armstrong win the Tour De France for the sixth time, and then the kids were up. The kids spent most of the morning down in the basement playing with their grandma, who was up for the weekend. During their naps, B and I watched the new episodes of Stargate and Stargate: Atlantis that were on the TiVo. Pretty good, I was happy with them. Also my friend who's a digital camera freak stopped by. He's sick of hard drives dying with all his files, so we took his old PC carcass (an Athlon 900) and went online to NewEgg.com to spec out a new RAID server for him. Four 200Gb serial ATA disks, a 3Ware RAID5 card, some fans, a beefy power supply, and a pair of gigabit ethernet cards later, he'd spent $1000.73, and was taking up a collection for that last 73 cents. This will give him a reliable 600Gb RAID over a very fast network. I was amazed at how cheap Gigabit Ethernet is now. $20 cards and $60 for a 5-port switch. After the kids got up from their naps we went to a dinner party with B's parent group. The one couple just had their second baby on Thursday, so only the dad and 3.5yr old daughter came, but the rest of the group was there and is a lot of fun. Lots of beer drank, and croquet was played. Today I am TOTALLY excited about my two older brothers and their wives coming, for tomorrow is Ozzfest! Wooo! Five brothers at a 12-hour buttrock fest featuring Judas Priest with their orignal singer back. Wooo! I took Weds off work as a hangover day. Saturday, July 24, 2004
Holy freakin' glub. It's hotter than Hades. It's 93F on the way to 98F. Crickey.
Poor Harry. Last night we had our friend Sophie over to babysit the kids while we went to the party, but the whole time he was eating his boboli pizza dinner, he was saying "Party! Micaela. Party!". Poor little guy wanted to go. He screamed and cried as we were leaving without him. The party was fun. Mostly folks from my work, people I rarely see outside of work. This morning I was only slightly hung over, just the thing for going over to the rental house at 10am and doing some repairs there. The master bath faucets leaked and one of the front window panes was broken. I arrive to take a look at it and it's already freakin' 800 zillion degrees out. The faucet handles would NOT come off the valve splines, too corroded and I didn't want to really reef on them because I didn't want anything to break. I finally got those off, and didn't have a deep enough socket to reach the nut. Gah! Off to the front window. After an hour of chiseling away ancient hardened glasing, I finally got the old window pane out. I went to my friend Dee's house to see if I could borrow that tool set. He's got every freakin' tool, but not what I needed. Gah. Off to Home Depot. They were packed, of course, and didn't have glass in stock. Gah! After I'd spent forever finding the plumbing tool set to get to that valve nut. Off to Lowes. They didn't have the right size glass in stock either. Gah! Ok, note to self: Never remove a window pane until you've got the replacement in hand. I drove to a glass shop, and fortunately it was only 12:45 beause they close at 1pm on Saturdays. They got my glass pronto, and new points and glasing. Woo! Back to the rental house. The new tool set worked, I was able to remove both valves. The washer on each was totally thrashed. I went to the nearby Ace hardware and got new washers. Back to the rental, installed the parts, turned the water back on and prayed. Woooo! Everything works great, no leaking, no dripping. I was very happy. The new window pane fit as well. Installing the points was easy, but the glasing was a total pain in the ass. I don't think it likes it when it's this hot out. I sure know that I don't. Eventually I got that finished, and I was done. Woo! Now I'm home again, and I'm going to shower before Isabel wakes up and we head off to my friend's 40th birthday party. Holy glub it's hot. Currently 90F, supposed to get to 97F. Crazy.
Last night we took the kids to the beach after dinner, they had a blast again. Isabel loves jumping up and down in the water, and she REALLY loves when I toss her into the air so she crashes down in a giant splash. Woo! Fun fun fun. I'd noticed a yellowjacket (hornet) nest in the eaves of the bit of roof over my porch, but kept forgetting to do something about it. Finally after reading a few positive reviews (one, two, near bottom) of Victor's poison-free hornet/wasp spray, I bought a bottle. It uses some foamy stuff and mint oil, which is supposed to kill them quickly. I'd watched the hole (they're climbing behind the 25+yr old vinyl siding) for a while, noticing that one took off or landed about once a second. Pretty good sized colony. I sprayed them, the stuff sure smells good. Minty-fresh. Anyway, I probably should have waited until right before bed when it's a tad cooler, but with the current weather there isn't any cooler. I didn't see any come out after I sprayed, but the ones returning would veer off, then they formed sorta an angry globe of pissed-off yellowjackets. Lovely. When I woke up, they seemed to be using it still. I don't know if this stuff actually works or not, but I could easily have missed where their nest is if they are deep inside there. Eh, I'll see how they're doing tonight and juice 'em again. Woo! We've got a party to attend tonight, and we've got babysitting. Our friend's professor is throwing a party for her successfully getting her PhD. Hopefully it'll be fun. We've got another party for a friend's 40th birthday tomorrow. Thursday, July 22, 2004
My current favorite "kid word" is "nock'em". At every meal, Harry says "nock'em, Daddy, nock'em!" He wants a napkin.
Isabel and I were in a a little "who's on first" situation tonight. She said she couldn't bemember something, and I said "I can't remember". She replied "Me either! I can't bemember too!" "No, Isabel, it's pronounced 'remember'. I can't REmember." "Me either! I can't bemember!" D'oh! After her bath when I was putting her jammies on, she said, "Do you see that, Daddy?" "Yes, Isabel, that's your vagina." "It's not my bagina, Daddy, Mommy has a bagina!" "oh, what do you call it?" "Oh, my bottom I guess." The set of plastic food that Isabel got for her birthday includes a number of veggies, including both a green and a red bell pepper. Harry knows we call them peppers, so he shakes them over other food, thinking they must be pepper shakers.
Yesterday was fun.
B noticed that Harry has been walking with a limp, and discovered that he's got a splinter embedded in his foot. Gah, and it's in there deep, too. It may well be time to visit the doctor. Isabel puked all over herself during her nap yesterday, she knocked on her door to tell B that "Mommy, I spit up". Ugh. She needed a bath to wash it all out of her hair. Dunno why it happened, she ate ravenously afterwards and drank lots of fluids. She seems 100% normal, so we have no idea what was up with that. She used to stick her hand down her throat, but she hasn't done that in a while. Oh well, something made her gag I guess. After dinner we took the kids to the local yuppie outdoor mall where they have bands every Weds during the summer. Yesterday was some band playing 60s go-go music, it was fun. We sat on some grass and Isabel started dancin' like crazy. That girl LOVES music and dancing. I had a particularly lame friend back out of poker, so three of us went up to one of the local poker rooms to play 3-6 limit hold'em. I was up then down then up, then got a good streak of great 2nd best hands (top two pair plus ace kicker beaten by trips, pair of aces and pair of 4s with queen kicker losing to aces, fours, and king kicker, lost two others on a one-lower kicker as well...) so I ended up down $100. Corey (aka WOPR) won $135, and Dee was up like $40, so we did leave with more than we arrived with, I just had a bad run and not enough time to ride it out. That's one of the things about Hold'Em, short playing periods can have all sorts of results. I'm confident I'm a better player than most of those who were at our table. Some of them play on total crap. One guy called a $6 bet by Corey on the river, and he had NOTHING but ace high. Corey had two pair, but I can't believe you'd call a $6 bet with not even a pair. Alright, I feel like talking about TV.
First, we're part way into Season 2 of Buffy. B noticed that Buffy wears a bra in every first season episode, but almost never wears a bra in season 2, unless she's got a see-through top on. Funny. Buffy is still only alright, not bad but not great. Stargate SG1 season 8 has started, I'm fully caught up. The spinoff, Stargate Atlantis has also started. I'm not 100% happy with how they set up the spinoff, but the cast seems like they might be entertaining. After 8 seasons, their constant "leveling up" by finding an uber opponent, finally beating them, only to find yet a MORE uber opponent is starting to wear a little thin. I guess I don't see that they have all that much choice, but still. We watched the premier of "The 4400", it wasn't bad. Looks to be on par with "Taken". ESPN's coverage of the 2004 World Series of Poker is pretty good, but I wish they'd be a little more definitive about what exact event they're covering. I mean, they wouldn't cover a track event without mentioning what distance it was, why cover a poker tourney without mentioning the buy-in? Speaking of poker, I've been playing two no-limit head's up bouts a day against my good friend Corey, aka WOPR. ("The only way to win is not to play!") Buck a game. After 12, we're even. I've never been up, but every time he gets up by 2 I manage to squeak my way back to even. Today there was a great hand. I had wired 9s, he had 97. Flop was 974. I go all-in, he calls. We turn up our cards, and he's basically drawing dead. He needed two running 7s, or two running diamonds to make a flush, but he didn't get either longshot and I took that round. Wooo! Makes up for him getting pocket rockets (AA) when I had A5 yesterday, and the flop included an A. Gah! Tuesday, July 20, 2004
Wooo! Congrats to my friend Micaela, who earned her PhD today. She's married to one of my best friends, and the mother of Katie, the baby B does daycare for. After 8 long years, she finally finished up.
I attended her PhD defense, it was the first time I've been to one. I went to a Master's thesis presentation for my then-officemate oh so many years ago, and his was MUCH more boring. This was pretty interesting, she's in Biological Oceanography and her thesis was about diatoms and their photorespiration cycles. I haven't had biology since high school 20 years ago, and I was able to follow along, she did a great job explaining things. Eight freakin' years, though. Man. Monday, July 19, 2004
I had a great weekend. On Friday afternoon after B left I watched Katie until her mom showed up. While Katie was playing, I watched "Y Tu Mama Tamien", a funny subtitled movie from Mexico that got good reviews a few years ago. TiVo is great for movies with subtitles, just like silent movies you can watch them at 3x speed. Woo!
By 6pm, I'd pulled out my old backpack, sleeping bag, and ridgerest pad. Couldn't find the stuffsack for the sleeping bag, so I just stuffed it into the backpack. I brought a minimum of clothes and food, and about a gallon of water. Good to go. There were five of us. Myself, my two youngest brothers Dan and Kurt, Dan's girlfriend Liz, and some random blonde girl named Jen. With five we needed to take my truck since it would be the most comfortable for that many adults. We loaded up and headed out. I'm not sure where the original destination was, but we got denied because the road was washed out from some storm, so we ended up heading back to go to either Upper or Lower Ashland Lake. We got to the trailhead around 10pm when it was dark, and everyone but me slept on the ground there, I slept in the back of the truck. Kurt and I drank some of the beers I'd thrown in a cooler. Mmmm, beer. The next morning we were up bright and early, and started the short (~3 mile) hike in. It was a strange hike because a large portion of the trail was boardwalk. Large 4"x12" by 16' long beams set side by side, going forever. Holy crap that was a lot of pressure treated lumber, and must have cost a fortune. It wasn't a busy trail, either, so we could only guess that someone at the Bureau of Land Mangement had a hard-on for that particular hike. Crickey. Anyway, we arrived at Upper Ashland lake and the ground was rather marshy, but they had made a few flat decks of boards for campsites. The lake itself was pretty marshy, surrounded by weeds, and covered in pollen and other scum. Yuck. We dropped our packs and Kurt and I headed down the trail to scout out Lower Ashland Lake. It was MUCH nicer. Rocks, clear of scum, and a few exposed cliffs to see. We walked back up to collect our gear and our friends and head back down. The campsite's main drawback was the boardwalk went right through the middle of it. It was crazy. There was also a bunch of big metal firepits with grates. The kind I've only seen at campgrounds, NEVER backpacking. They must have flow all that stuff in. We only saw maybe a dozen people all day, most of which were day trip hikers. After we'd gotten set up, we scoured the area for dry logs that would float and were small enough to get into the water. We proceeded to make a flimsy raft out of these, and Kurt and the girls and I used this to float out to the middle of the lake. It was too flimsy, however, so we found a few more beefy logs and built it up strong enough that Kurt could stand up in the center posing as a Viking, with the girls on each side, and myself in the water behind pushing the raft along. It turned out most of the lake was only about 3' deep, with occasional spots deeper than I was. I guess it's really more of a large pond. Still, it was a lot of fun. For food, we had a totally insane quantity of stuff. I mean, we probably had 30 pounds of various foods, mostly bags of bulk food from Whole Paycheck (granolas, dried fruits, etc) and for dinner we had a big-ass can of red beans, an onion, some sun-dried tomatoes, and some bulk chili mix with TVP (textured veggie protein). Heated up with water it was darn tasty. Oh yeah, we also had a few loaves of bread and a buttload of cheese. It was freakin' nuts how much food we brought. SInce we had that giant firepit we had to make a fire. Lots of wood handy, including lots of dry cedar chunks. For those who don't know wood, cedar is really light, and burns amazi ngly fast, almost like cardboard. Uff-da. Big ass fire. Kurt had slipped the 22oz bottle of Stone Brewing's "Ruination IPA" (so named because it has so many hops it will ruin your palate) out of my cooler and into his backpack, so we tied a string around the neck, tied it to a floaty stick, and sunk it into a deep spot on the lake for cooling. Damn it was tasty. We also had a 50ml bottle of pear brandy that I'd brought, as well as 177ml flask of Auchentoshan 12-yr, a tasty single-malt whiskey. For sleep that night, it was threatening rain but not delivering YET, so we set up Dan's huge tent but everyone slept on the ground except me, I slept on the boardwalk. First time I've slept *on* the trail. Heh. The next morning we packed up and headed out. The last beer in the cooler was still icy cold (a Pyramid Heffeweizen), and we were home by 10:15am. B wasn't back yet, so I borrowed Kurt and ran to Costco to buy those bunkbeds she's been on my case about. When I got back she STILL wasn't home, so I frantically started setting it up to surprise her. I got finished about 5 minutes before she got home. Whew! Friday, July 16, 2004
B and the kids went to Portland this weekend to visit a friend of hers who had her 3rd baby about 4 months ago. She was going to go when we went to San Antonio, but that took precedence.
I had a bunch of plans for this weekend, but got a better offer, I 'm going backpacking with my two youngest brothers, one of their girlfriends, and one other friend. Wooo! I haven't been backpacking in a few years. Wednesday, July 14, 2004
Last night we went to Costco for yet another 4 gallons of milk, and I decided to buy their set of poker chips. Good thing I did, they only had 3 sets left, and apparently they were the only Costco in the region to still have any sets.
They also had a great set of wood bunkbeds. We're planning on swapping the kids room with the larger guest room, and were planning on getting a nice set of bunkbeds at some point, but these were really nice and sturdy, for $400. Plus $200 for mattresses, and we'd have to find $600 somewhere quickly if we wanted to get these. That's the most annoying thing about Costco. If you see something you like, you have to get it that day, or you'll never see it again. Tuesday, July 13, 2004
Speaking of BEEEER, I was at Whole Paycheck (er Foods) the other day perusing their fine fine beer selection, and based on a staff recommendation I tried a bottle of Bajithka, a Russian Lager. The card said it was crisp and refreshing, not having that tired "spent 6 months getting here" flavor that most would-be-good imported beers have. By golly, whoever wrote that was spot on. It was a damn fine lager, just the thing in the heat. I wish I had a few more.
Yesterday was another beautiful 80 degree sunny Seattle summer day. We were going to take the kids swimming at Mathew's Beach, but B had heard that it had been closed over the weekend due to an outbreak of fecal coliform. Ugh. No thanks, even though it's now open and "safe", I'll wait a bit, thanks anyway. So, we took them to Greenlake to the wading pool there. Holy cow they loved it. HUGE freakin' grins on their face as they ran back and forth, stomping like fools, have a grand old time. They thought it was the best pool ever, noplace that was too deep.
We also took them to the espresso stand, and the guy there had ice cream push-pops for $1. I was amazed, expecting them to be at least $1.50 or more likely $2. That guy is getting a lot more of my business. Monday, July 12, 2004
I feel fine today. No immediate adverse effects from the 72 hour fast.
Yesterday I performed my 6th TiVo upgrade. I really should start charging for it. :) Sunday, July 11, 2004
Wooo! I made it. Immediately afterward, I drank a glass of gatoraid, then fried up a couple eggs and ate them on buttered toast. Mmmm, damn it tasted good.
Now I know some of the limits of my willpower, and know what it's like to fast.
65 hours now. Feeling fine. It's weird. I don't have any real normal physical hunger pains, they are all mental. Physically I'm doing fine, we walked around the Zoo this morning with some friends and I had no problems.
One issue I guess I have is how to get off this crazy horse. Do I ease back into food, with broth or something, or take one friend's suggestion and break my fast with style, by going to Beth's and ordering one of their 12-egg omelets, with ham and chili! Wooo! That does sound damn good right now. Christ does that sound good right now. Washed down with a few pints of cold India Pale Ale. Either that, or just rip into the bag of Doritos that someone brought over for the 4th, it's sitting unopened in the kitchen. One friend who did a 72hr fast, except he drank juice and milk so it wasn't as extreme, started obsessing about egg salad sandwiches when the 72 hours were nearly up. He kept thinking it would be the best tasting thing ever, and when he had one to break his fast, he totally thought it was the best tasting food ever. Having one the next day he reported it was just "eh".
I haven't eaten anything in 58 hours now. I've got just the slightest headache, but that could be from getting extra sleep today. I'm mostly feeling fine. It actually hasn't been that hard, not nearly as hard as I would have guessed. I mean, I spent like 3 hours watching Food Network on TV yesterday afternoon after I did a bunch of chores, and it didn't make me any hungrier than it normally does.
B and I got to go see Spiderman 2 last night. Not bad, but not that great either. I don't think I'll bother with the sequel when it comes out. Saturday, July 10, 2004
I'm at hour 35 of an attempted 72 hour fast. I've had nothing but water since a popcorn snack Thursday night. Amazingly, I feel mostly normal. Not starving, just a tiny bit off.
I've never fasted before, and thought I'd see if I could do it. Right now it seems easy, but the first half might be a lot easier than the second, or it might actually be the hard part, I won't know until the weekend is over. I'm sure the longest I've ever gone without eating is something like a dinner, then skip breakfast and have a latish lunch. Some people say fasting is spiritual, others say it's cleansing. I don't know about either of those, but the only way to find out is to try it. Meanwhile, the kids eat like fiends. They each ate two scrambled eggs for breakfast, and Harry also had a large piece of 9-grain toast. It always amazes me how much they eat sometimes. At least it didn't bother me to watch them eat. Thursday, July 08, 2004
Heh.
Me: "Hey, Bridget and Isabel should clean up the house while Harry and I play." B: "Please don't teach our daughter gender roles." Isabel: "But I CAN teach gender roles! I CAN!"
Hoo boy. A certain UN-friend of mine brought over some tallboy cans of Steel Reserve High Gravity, a 8.1% alcohol beer. He claims it was in revenge for certain alcohol-related incidents in the past. Ok, sure one time I stopped at the store and bought a case of MGD cans and the largest jug of red wine they had and dropped them off at his door, and the next morning his night-shift-working roommate came home to find him passed out in a pool of his own vomit, but that's all in the past.
So, during poker I drank this Steel Reserve, and damn if it isn't nasty. Not only that, it keelhauled me, leaving me totally hung like a french monkey. Ugga. I was nearly ready to hurl this morning. I still have that "not so fresh" feeling. Plus I lost $8 at poker. Tuesday, July 06, 2004
B wanted to do something different yesterday, so we drove to Snoqualmie Falls yesterday with the kids. They liked the waterfall, but the half mile hike from the top down to the bottom either scared Harry or he was just plain lazy, cuz I had to haul his heavy butt most of the way. Isabel was the opposite, totally into hiking and having a great time.
After dinner we went over to visit our former downstairs housemate at her new home, and then we went to visit some friends who'd just spent two weeks in Pittsburgh. They had recently had my brother relandscape their back yard, so it was fun to see the beautiful new stone patio and the lawn, and it didn't hurt that Chuck had brought back some very tasty cigars. Apparently some east coast importer had imported tons of Cuban tobacco in 1957 or 1958, and promptly went out of business. The US government impounded the tobacco in lieu of back taxes, and then promptly forgot about it for 30 years. Some company finally got ahold of this tobacco, got it certified as legal pre-Castro Cuban leaf, and rolled it up into cigars. Rich and yummy, but they violate my biggest pet peeve about cigars: Tight draws. If it's hard to suck through, the best smoke in the world isn't going to be fun. Monday, July 05, 2004
Saturday morning we finally made it to the local Farmer's Market. Bought some basil, tomatoes, a half flat of raspberries which lasted only a few minutes before being devoured, some goat cheese, and a loaf of sesame chibatta bread. After we left we headed to Costco to pick up some supplies for our 4th of July BBQ and to buy 6 gallons of milk. I'm shocked at how much milk our kids drink, and its SO much cheaper at Costco.
Our BBQ yesterday was a lot of fun. We had 14 adults and 5 kids plus our family, quite a gathering. Half were my friends and half were B's friends. We made a dozen bratwurst, burgers, corn-on-the-cob, sauteed pepper and onions for the brats, chili for the brats, B had made tater salad, I'd made 4.5lbs of honey glaze chicken wings (my first time making wings. For some surreal reason, I'd never quite mentally put together what exactly chicken wings were. I mean, I've had them a ton of times, but they're always little mini drumsticks or little wingy parts, and I never put together that you cut the 3-piece wing section into thirds and toss the tips. Don't ask me, I'm a little freaked out wondering what the hell I was thinking before...) and a bunch of people brought sides like pea salad, greek salad, and yet another greek salad. Heh. Plus tons of chips and sodas and beer. The 'Q started at 4pm, and all my friends left shortly after 7pm, but B's friends, being more fun apparently, stayed until 10pm when we walked up the hill to see the big downtown fireworks show. Technically, I think we saw the slightly smaller Lake Union show, but I'm not 100% sure which show we saw, it's quite a ways from here and there are hills in the way. Right now I'm mildly hung over, helping Isabel solve her US States wooded puzzle. She loves it, "No, Harry, this is only for Big Girls and Daddies." "Do you know where Texas lives, Harry? No, not up there, Texas lives down here..." Saturday, July 03, 2004
Holy freakin' cow. That concert was so damn good. Within the first 30 seconds it had already paid for the $100 ticket price.
Reminded me of a quote from a "Return of the King" review I read: "I came so much that only dust shot out" It was totally freakin' awesome. The band was having a blast, the crowd was having a blast, it was glorious. Friday, July 02, 2004
Wooo! Rush! In honor of this, my 666th blog entry, I thought I'd letcha all know I'm going to see my 8th Rush concert tonight. They're having their 30th Anniversary tour, and it will be my first trip to White River Amphitheater. It's way the hell down in the sticks, but it's still local compared to the other outdoor venue in Washington state, the Gorge Amphitheater. Personally, the two hour drive to the Gorge always sucked, so I'm glad the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation built it some local competition, and I see the Gorge has mostly Christian shows now with all the buttrock shows coming to White River. Fine with me, I'm a buttrocker not a Christian.
Even though I'm a huge Rush geek, I'm almost more excited about my second trip to White River, to see Ozzfest later this month with all my brothers. Rob Halford has returned to Judas Priest, and we're all going together as one big brother buttrockfest. RrrrRRrrrrrrRRRRRR!!! (arms pumping up and down like Beavis) |
