I'm in Munich right now, awaiting going out drinking. I'm using my friend's MacBook Pro with german keyboard, which is a serious pain in the ass since the shift key is tiny making typing difficult, plus the keycaps are all wacky. B and I left home at 2:30 on Friday afternoon, and got a ride to the airport with two of her friends who were flying to LA an hour earlier than us. We got checked in and met them at a bar past security. I had two large Pyramid Thunderhead IPAs and a reuben. We were in the very last outboard row in the British Air 747, there are two more rows in the middle behind us. They gave me a beer, a mini bottle of white wine, a nice dinner, and each seat back has an LCD screen with about 40 on demand movies to choose from, free. Not really free, but included in the $1100 each we paid for airfare. The Xanax my doctor gave me to sleep on the flight didn't help, so B and I watched some movies and read some. We watched "The Good German", which wasn't very good, and I watched "Letters from Iwo Jima", which was Iwo from the japanese perspective. We landed at Heathrow around noon on Saturday, and after a few snafus figured out how to get out through security, we took the tube into Picadilly Circus, took a doubledecker bus tour through London, and went into a pub, Tom Cribb. I had a pint of a spring hop ale and a spitfire ale, and some fish and chips, they battered a whole half a fish, skin included, very excellent. out of time, more probably when i get back on monday june 4th Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Oh man, I have SO got to learn not to invite my brother over for dinner on a weeknight. Ugga. For some unknown reason, I feel like total crap this morning. I mean, I feel like I'm about to hurl. It can't have anything to do with the half a bottle of red wine, half a bottle of wine wine, 3 beers, or several scotches I had last night. Nope. None too bright, mind you. Saturday, May 19, 2007
Double glub. I felt fine on Thursday until about 3pm my stomach started feeling a little upset. At first I thought I was just having some heartburn from the chili I had for lunch, but a few hours later I definitely had "angry tummy" as Isabel calls it, and went to bed early. At 11pm I was up hurling, and the rest of the night was miserable. I had the same thing Harry had on Tuesday. Ugga. Vegas was a good time. I ended up down $150 on poker, putting in about 13 hours. I think I am going to try to not play in the mornings and afternoons so much, since that was my predominant losing time, making it up in the evenings and after midnight when the play is a lot sloppier. One of our Vegas buddies wasn't allowed to come this time, so we took a photo of his face, printed it out life size, and taped it to foamboard and put it on a stick, so we could include him in lots of funny photos. Lots of waitresses asked about him, and most of them thought it was so sweet of us, only one caught on and said, "you're just doing this to mock the shit out of him, right?" Heh. This year we stayed at TI, which is what Treasure Island is known as now that the de-themeing of Vegas continues. Not a trace of the pirate theme remains. The pool there is just mediocre, no lazy river or wave pool. The last day I had about 15 beers over about a 15 hour period, staying up until 4am. When I had to get up a few hours later to fly home I was not feeling super great, so I left Vegas as I arrived, feeling used up. I needed a vacation from that vacation. Last Saturday was Harry's birthday party. B decided that the kids get a big birthday party every 5 years, at 5, 10, and their choice between 15 and 16. Every other year they can have something small at home with 4-5 friends. Harry decided he wanted another dinosaur themed party, this time at the inflatables. B put me in charge of the dinosaur tattoos. I had enough for each of the dozen or more kids, plus a few extras, so I made a rule, if you wanted a second tat, you had to have it in the middle of your forehead. Heh. I did have a few takers. A week later Harry's is still on his head. Eh, I might not be the most popular with the other parents, but geeze, they're 5 year olds, they shoudl have a stegasaurus tat on the forehead. B and I leave for Munich next Friday. I think we're mostly ready, but we'll spend some time this weekend going over everything. Tuesday, May 15, 2007
Glub, what a night. Harry was fine yesterday, but last night at about 1am he puked in bed, then proceeded to hurl every 90 minutes or so all night. B gave him a little water at 7:30am and he technicolor yawned that up too. He gets very very angry at dry heaves, not understanding. Poor little guy. Around 10am B gave him a popsicle, and he held that down, and everything afterwards, and he acted totally normal this evening except he did NOT want to go to bed or lie down. Thursday, May 10, 2007
Uff. I got back from Vegas yesterday, very tired and used up. Today is Harry's birthday. I took the morning off to spend some time with him. First, I made pancakes and added some instant oatmeal to the mix, and used a funnel to pour out animal shapes on the griddle. Harry got a dog and a brachiosaurus, and was a very happy boy. He opened his presents with us this morning too. The crazy lady I married bought him a set of dinosaur sheets, comforter, pillowcase, etc. I had to go to Toys R Us last night to buy him a toy, sheesh. Sheets. Sure he loved them, but still. I bought him a motorized tank. He loved it even more, playing with it while yelling "Oooo RAH!". Grandma bought him a wooly mammoth, which he named "Harry" since it has spiky hair like he does. Next the two of us went to the store to buy cupcakes for today, plus his birthday snack for preschool, donuts and watermelon. We dropped that off and went to the Zoo, just a boy and his dad. He had a blast, running from exhibit to exhibit. We tried to get a photo at the photo booth he always plays in, but he could not stop looking at the video screen, and since the camera is way below the screen, his eyes were looking WAY up each time. Oh well, he still loves it. Following a snack of popcorn and pink lemonade, we went home, I dropped him off, and went to work. Sunday, May 06, 2007
Wednesday night we didn't have enough guys for poker, and 3 of us wanted to play Steve Jackson game's Munchkin, but WOPR thought that would be too geeky so he stayed in his mom's basement watching Dr Who. I ended up going to Goldies again, where I lost my $100. One hand I was big blind, I had 78 offsuit, the flop was 78K, I raised every chance I got, and a guy with Q4 caught a runner-runner straight on the river with 6 and 5 hitting. Lordy. Not my night. On Friday night after my work kegger (two Elysian beers, Perseus Porter and their Pale Ale) we went to a friends house for dinner. On Thursday he'd gone to Westport with some fishing buddies and they took a charter boat out a few hours off the coast for some halibut fishing. Everyone on the boat got a halibut, plus they killed a ton of ling cod and rockfish. He took a ton home and vacuum packed and froze most of it. We had a tasty halibut with bacon and a yummy sauce for dinner. Saturday morning I got up with the kids, took them to Top Pot donuts for some breakfast, we went to my brother's house to try and pick up the raspberry starts he has for me but he wasn't home, then we went to the U District Farmer's Market for some cheese curds, came home, got ready and took the bus down to the UW for the UW crew rowing races and the Opening Day of Boating Season boat parade. The kids had never been on a bus, they thought it was pretty cool. After we got home I helped B finish installing a closet organizer in our bedroom, it's much nicer to have a shelf unit in the middle of the closet and bilevel hanging bars for clothes. Last night we had three parties to attend. First we went to my little brother's salon grand opening. He had two elysian beers on tap as well, their Wise ESB and their other IPA, not the normal one, I forget the name. B tried to point out a hot lesbian couple, I laughed, of COURSE I'd notice them. Duh. The second party was a Kentucky Derby party at an old college friends' house, it was damn near over when we got there. The last party was a Tiki/Luau/Cinco De Mayo party. They normally have a tiki party for my friend's birthday, but the party got bumped a week this year so they combined it with Cinco. Uff. Today I'm hung over and about to leave for 3 days in sunny Las Vegas. Wooo! Tuesday, May 01, 2007
I finally started reading a chapter a day of C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" to the kids. So far we're two chapters in and they seem to be enjoying it quite a bit, but I'm sure a ton of it is flying over their heads. I mean, I had to look up exactly what an "Eton collar" was myself. Last night was the monthly meeting of my "investing" drinking club. Good meeting. Vivendi was presented and shot down for being a corrupt French company, even with their massive World of Warcraft profits. One of the guys said that he'd come home from work 45 minutes late one day and had had a few drinks, and his wife hadn't spoken to him for two weeks now. Crickey, I am so SO glad I didn't marry a high maintenance psycho bitch. If I did that to B she'd lay into me for a day or so, and then forgive me, which is perfectly fair. |
